US Continues to Hinder Restoration of Iranian Nuclear Agreement: Lavrov

The United States continues to obstruct the restoration of the Iranian nuclear agreement by attempting to negotiate additional conditions for itself. This was stated today by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Certain obstacles have arisen, primarily related to the position of the United States, which is trying to negotiate additional conditions, thereby altering the original concept and content of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) established by the UN Security Council,” noted Lavrov.

“We proceed from the premise that justice demands the restoration of the JCPOA without any exceptions or additions,” emphasized the Russian minister during a press conference following negotiations with the Bahraini foreign minister.

In 2015, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the US, France, and Iran signed the nuclear agreement, JCPOA, which included the lifting of sanctions in exchange for the limitation of Iran's nuclear program. In May 2018, the then-US President Donald Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and reinstated sanctions against Tehran.

In response, Iran announced a phased reduction of its obligations under the agreement, abandoning limitations on nuclear research, centrifuges, and uranium enrichment levels.
