In the Gegharkunik region, the precipitation and frost recorded on May 20-21 and May 24-25, 2022, resulted in damage to stone fruit trees and the sowing of vegetable crops. According to Martin Petrosyan, the head of the Agriculture and Environmental Protection Department of the regional administration, walnut trees were predominantly and extensively damaged, while apricot, peach, cherry, and sour cherry trees, which were in bloom or fruiting stages, suffered partial damage.

Vegetable crops like cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, and pepper seedlings, as well as bean sowings, were also frostbitten. “While the damage to vegetable crops can potentially be mitigated through re-sowing or replanting, the damage to fruit trees is irreversible, and fruit drop is almost inevitable. The extent of damages in the communities is currently being assessed,” stated Petrosyan.

It is noteworthy that during the snow events on May 20-21, snowfall was recorded in residential areas, while on May 24-25, it occurred in higher altitude zones. Earlier, we reported that Auroranews.am received photos from Gegharkunik. As summer approaches, flowering trees in the Geghadzor community of Gegharkunik remain under a thick layer of snow.
