Samvel Babayan’s Faction Did Not Join the Statement on Artsakh Issue: Abrahamyan
The four factions of the Artsakh Parliament have issued a joint statement responding to the trilateral meeting in Brussels and the subsequent declarations. However, Samvel Babayan's faction did not join the statement regarding the Artsakh issue. This was noted by Tigran Abrahamyan, a member of the "Honorary" faction.
"This statement particularly emphasizes that under the current conditions, the authorities of the Republic of Armenia must be guided exclusively by the position of advancing and defending the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination in international platforms. This is based on the decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia dated July 8, 1992, according to which 'any document, whether international or domestic, that states that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan is unacceptable for Armenia.' Both the ruling powers in Artsakh and Armenia should prioritize the declarations on the formation of the two Armenian republics, with values enshrined in the decision of September 2, 1991, and the independence referendum of December 10, 1991.
No official or political force is authorized to individually decide the future of the homeland, for the creation of which thousands of our people have sacrificed their lives. This is the first firm response from the political forces of Artsakh regarding the ongoing negotiations on the Artsakh issue and the external course of the Armenian government. However, it is significant that the faction supporting the current president of Artsakh has joined the statement, while Samvel Babayan's faction has not. Essentially, the lowering of the bar on the Artsakh issue, the absence of the right to self-determination in the process, and the Armenian government's consideration of Artsakh’s inclusion in Azerbaijan still satisfy someone in the region," Abrahamyan wrote.
