Gabriel Sargsyan Becomes Runner-Up at European Individual Chess Championship
Gabriel Sargsyan, the top player of the Armenian national team, claimed the title of runner-up at the European Individual Chess Championship held in Slovenia.
The Armenian grandmaster scored 8.5 points out of a possible 11, sharing the first place with Germany's Matthias Blübaum, who was declared the winner based on tiebreak criteria.
In the final round, Gabriel Sargsyan drew with Spanish player Jaime Santos Latasa playing with the white pieces in just six moves. Matthias Blübaum also settled for a draw against Croatian Ivan Saric.
The top 20 chess players earned spots for the 2023 World Cup tournament.
