Armenia - Azerbaijan Border, Nagorno-Karabakh: What Ararat Mirzoyan and NATO's Deputy Secretary General Discussed
On March 17, in Brussels, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with Mircea Joana, NATO's Deputy Secretary General. Mirzoyan expressed satisfaction with the existing political dialogue with NATO. In this context, the implementation of the Individual Partnership Action Plan was emphasized as an effective tool for the development of cooperation.
The discussions included the participation of Armenian peacekeeping units in international peacekeeping missions and Armenia’s contribution to strengthening international security and stability. Regional security issues were also addressed.
Ararat Mirzoyan presented the situation in the Armenia-Azerbaijan border area and Nagorno-Karabakh, highlighting violations of the ceasefire by Azerbaijan and actions aimed at creating a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as facts regarding psychological pressure on the civilian population.
Mirzoyan and Joana exchanged views on the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey.
On the same day, the Armenian Foreign Minister delivered a speech at the North Atlantic Council, discussing the cooperation between Armenia and NATO over the past 30 years, the consequences of Azerbaijan's aggression against Artsakh in 2020, pressing humanitarian issues requiring urgent solutions, particularly the cases of Armenian prisoners of war illegally held in Azerbaijan, the entry of international organizations into Nagorno-Karabakh, and the prospects for resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict under the mandate of the OSCE Minsk Group and the negotiations for a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan without preconditions, as well as various issues of international and regional security.
