No Military Support Will Be Provided to Ukraine; The Stage Will Remain Ukraine and Russia - Gurgen Arsenyan

“It was a surprise for me that the issues existing between the two brother states moved from discussions into the battlefield, and we can say that a large-scale war has begun; a nationwide mobilization has been announced by the Ukrainian leadership, and a state of war is declared, with battles taking place along the border,” said Gurgen Arsenyan, a member of the Armenia-Ukraine Friendship Group and a deputy of the ‘Civil Contract’ party, in an interview with 24News.

When asked whether he considers the intervention of other countries likely, the deputy pointed out that it is necessary to take into account that other countries are members of NATO, and he hopes that reason will prevail, and there will not be a world war. “I do not think any other country's armed forces will intervene in these events. The USA has officially stated that American troops will not be sent to the territory of Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia will remain the battlefield. I also rule out military support from Europe; perhaps there may be financial support or sanctions applied against Russia,” he added.

Addressing the question of how the Russian-Ukrainian conflict may impact Armenia, the deputy noted, “During such events, when the world is distracted by significant happenings, regional actions take place under the cover of that light. We witnessed a similar event in 2020 when, under the conditions of a global pandemic, the armed forces of Azerbaijan carried out military operations against Artsakh, and that went unnoticed by the global community. From that perspective, we need to minimize risks. The efforts exerted by the authorities toward establishing regional peace reduce possible risks. At this moment, the guarantee of security and peace for the Republic of Armenia is our political prudence.”

When asked whether Azerbaijan could take advantage of the opportunity to create tension at the border, Gurgen Arsenyan stated, “Predictions regarding Azerbaijan are made on the premise that the leadership of Azerbaijan is not a collection of madmen; they are political figures who can make a correct assessment and make appropriate decisions. It is less likely that they will take advantage of the opportunity.”
