Cars Trapped Under Thick Layer of Snow in Istanbul
Streets in Istanbul have become filled with cars trapped under a thick layer of snow. Drivers of vehicles with summer tires have attempted to free their cars from the snow's grasp, but after unsuccessful attempts, they abandoned their vehicles and left the scene. The city administration has urged drivers to return and remove their cars from the streets.
"Please let’s quickly remove the vehicles," tweeted Istanbul Mayor Ali Yerlikaya.
Meanwhile, tourists who have been stranded at Istanbul’s international airport for two days are also protesting and demanding to be sent home. Istanbul is experiencing a transport collapse due to heavy snowfall.
The extreme cold affecting much of the eastern Mediterranean region is attributed to an Icelandic cyclone. The storm, named “Elpida,” is expected to last at least until Wednesday, which could lead to further chaos.
