Video: Death Toll from Storm ‘Ida’ in Northeastern US Reaches 45

At least 45 people have died in the wake of Storm ‘Ida’ in the northeastern United States, according to reports from CNN, citing local authorities. The hardest-hit areas are New York and New Jersey, where there are multiple fatalities. There are also casualties reported in Pennsylvania. Earlier reports mentioned 29 deaths in the northeastern United States, as conveyed by TASS.

On Wednesday, the governors of the three states declared a state of emergency due to Storm ‘Ida’, which significantly weakened after hitting Louisiana on August 29 but brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in its wake. Meteorologists classified the weather phenomenon on Wednesday night as a post-tropical cyclone and warned it was accompanied by “heavy precipitation and threats of flooding.”

Within just a few hours, New York received 15-25 cm of rainfall. Local residents were alerted to possible flooding and tornado warnings. The main impact was felt in the Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods, where local residents reported flooding on streets, homes, and the subway on social media. The rain led to temporary disruptions at all three airports in the city, and several matches of the ongoing US Open tennis tournament in the metropolis were canceled.
