Azerbaijani Forces Continue to Block Kapan-Goris Road: Have Negotiations Resumed?
The section of the Kapan-Goris highway closed by Azerbaijani forces remains blocked, and trilateral negotiations regarding the opening of these areas have not yet resumed today, August 27. It is expected that discussions will commence later today. This was stated by Kapan mayor Gevorg Parsyan in a conversation with NEWS.am.
The closure of the Karmirakar-Shurnukh and the road section from Goris to Vorotan has cut off the villages of Vorotan, Shurnukh, and Bardzravan. “There are alternative routes connecting the villages, but they are in poor condition. The issue is that the M2 highway is closed, which poses serious problems not only for Syunik but also for the Republic of Armenia, as the connection with Iran is severed,” said Gevorg Parsyan.
It should be noted that on August 25, at 11:00 PM, the Shurnukh-Karmirakar section of the Goris-Kapan road was closed, approximately 10 km from Shurnukh village, and the Azerbaijani forces refuse to reopen it. The night before, around 40 vehicles were evacuated from the road. The Office of the Human Rights Defender had reported that at noon, Azerbaijani armed forces had also closed the road from Goris to Vorotan.
The trilateral negotiations that took place yesterday ended in the evening but yielded no results, as the Azerbaijani side continues to keep these road sections closed.
