Current Situation in Syunik: Azerbaijani Side Deploys Equipment in Vorotan Area
The road sections of Karmrakar-Shurnukh and Goris-Vorotan remain closed, and the situation has not changed. This information was shared with Sputnik Armenia by Syunik Deputy Governor Narek Babayan.
"Negotiations to open the road were supposed to resume, but at this moment I am not aware if they have started or not. We have evacuated the residents living in that area; however, there are people who have chosen to stay in their homes, and they are now at home," he said.
Babayan also addressed reports that construction is ongoing in the Vorotan area, where Azerbaijani soldiers are stationed. He mentioned that he passed through that road days ago and dismissed rumors of a gas station being built there, though it's possible that earthworks are being carried out.
He informed that there is equipment near the positions of the Azerbaijanis in the Vorotan area, but it is unclear whether it is operational.
We also inquired about the situation in Shurnukh from the deputy governor. The village mayor, Hakob Arshakyan, told the media that Shurnukh remains "suspended on barbed wire" with no alternative road to Kapan. "A Shurnukh resident can travel via the Vorotan-Khot-Goris road towards Goris, while the main road to Kapan is closed. In other words, the Vorotan road is blocked from the Karahunji section, but we have an open road from Vorotan to Khot," Babayan stated.
As already reported, on August 25, Azerbaijani military personnel blocked traffic on the Karmrakar-Shurnukh section of the Kapan-Goris highway. The vehicles in the area have been evacuated. The National Security Service of Armenia has reported that efforts are underway to restore traffic on the highway.
Today, enemy military personnel have also blocked the Goris-Vorotan section. Currently, the situation in Goris is overall calm, but roads from Karahunji village to Vorotan, Shurnukh, and Kapan are completely closed. No one knows about further actions and plans, and local residents also have no information. Both Armenian and Russian border guards are present in the area.
