An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale occurred near the village of Sameba, located 25 kilometers from the town of Ninotsminda, approximately 150 kilometers away from Tbilisi. This information was reported on the website of the National Center for Seismic Monitoring.

The tremors were recorded at local time 09:31, with the epicenter at a depth of nine kilometers.

A previous earthquake measuring 4.2 in magnitude also took place near the Sameba village on August 17. Several earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the Sameba village during the night of August 16. The first tremor, measuring 3.7, occurred at 23:42 local time, followed by an increase in the strength of the earthquakes, leading to the most powerful tremor of 5.1 magnitude at 05:44 local time in Tbilisi. The last recorded tremor was at 05:51, measuring 3.0.

Georgia is a country with medium seismic activity. The strongest earthquake recorded in Georgia was a 7.0 magnitude quake that occurred in 1991 in the Racha and Imereti regions (Western Georgia). The intensity at the epicenter reached 9 on the scale.

Approximately 200 people died as a result of that earthquake, and nearly 46,000 houses and a thousand industrial facilities were destroyed, according to Sputnik.
