A Huge Natural Gas Reserve Discovered in Northern Iran, Can Be Exported in Several Directions: Armen Ashotyann

Armen Ashotyann writes on his Facebook page: "A huge reserve of natural gas has been discovered in northern Iran. The deposit, called Chalus, is located in the Iranian section south of the Caspian Sea.

Interestingly, this is the first gas accumulation of such volume found in northern Iran. Iran's main gas reserves are in the south (South Pars). The volumes of gas from the new deposit could potentially meet approximately 20% of Europe's gas consumption demands in the long term.

Both Russia and China are ready to provide financial and technical support for the operation of the field.

From an energy policy perspective, this gas could be directed towards:

  1. China, if connecting to the Turkmen gas transportation system.
  2. Europe, via Azerbaijan's gas pipeline network, including through the Southern Gas Corridor.
  3. Turkey, through existing gas pipelines, creating competition for Azerbaijani and Russian gas in the country's market.
  4. India, via a gas pipeline to be constructed through Pakistan (a project that has been delayed for years).
  5. And finally, the most favorable but very theoretical option for us: towards Europe through the territory of Armenia (specifically via Syunik), provided sufficient infrastructure development, including in Georgia, and Russian political agreement.
