Explosion in Yerevan: Criminal Case Initiated, Investigation Committee Provides Details

On August 14, 2021, at 02:05 AM, the Operational Management Center of the Police of the Republic of Armenia received a report from a citizen regarding an explosion heard near a gas station on Saralanj Street in Yerevan. Passengers exited the vehicle following the blast. This was reported by the Investigation Committee.

As a result of the measures taken, it was established that an explosion occurred with an unidentified object in the area adjoining Saralanj Road opposite one of the addresses on Aghbyur Serob Street. The explosion damaged the left side of a moving 'Mitsubishi Pajero IO,' the front left door, the left headlight, and the drainage system.

During the investigation at the scene, metal fragments resembling an explosive grenade, the grenade handle, and soil mass from the explosion site were discovered and collected.

A criminal case has been initiated at the Arabkir Investigation Division of the Yerevan City Investigation Department of the Investigation Committee, under the characteristics of Part 1 of Article 235 and Point 1 of Part 2 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

Expert examinations have been appointed, including explosive technical, forensic, and investigative examinations. Necessary measures are being undertaken to clarify the circumstances of the incident and identify the person presumably committing the crime. The preliminary investigation is ongoing.

Notice: A suspect or accused in a presumed crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law as established by a court judgment that has entered into legal force.
