Video: Rampant Fire Destroys 150-Year-Old Greenville Town in California

A rampant fire in California has destroyed the small town of Greenville, whose history dates back to the era of the "Gold Rush". This was reported by local television station KXTV, as shared by Armenpress.

The "Dixie" fire reached Greenville on the night of August 5. “The town was obliterated in two hours,” one resident told the television station.

According to the Associated Press, among other buildings, the gas station, bar, and hotel in the town have burned down. Greenville was founded in the mid-19th century during a wave of immigrants lured by the "Gold Rush". To this day, there are structures in the town that were built over a hundred years ago. According to the latest census data, the town had a population of 1,100.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the "Dixie" fire has already engulfed 278,000 acres (over 112,500 hectares) of land. The fire has destroyed more than 60 structures and threatens over 12,000 more. Firefighters have managed to control 35 percent of the area, and efforts are planned to fully contain the blaze by August 13, according to a statement reported by RIA Novosti.
