Lavrov Expresses Concern Over Erdogan's Statement
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides held a telephone conversation during which they discussed the situation surrounding the Varosha closed area in the city of Famagusta, as reported by Ermenihaber.
Lavrov emphasized the necessity of implementing the UN Security Council resolutions, which envisage the creation of a bi-communal federation with two zones between the Greek and Turkish communities in Cyprus, and all of this through negotiations.
Referring to the Varosha issue, Lavrov also pointed out the need to refrain from any actions that could destabilize the situation and create additional obstacles to resolving the Cyprus problem.
It is noteworthy that Ersin Tatar, the leader of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have made statements regarding the opening and settlement of Varosha. These statements have been criticized by Greece, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and France.
