On the second day of the preliminary rounds of the online rapid chess tournament Goldmoney Asian Rapid, Levon Aronian faced the world champion and world number one, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, starting off with a pivotal match.
The Armenian grandmaster, playing with the white pieces, secured a victory on the 66th move, sharing the first place with Russian Vladislav Artemiev at a score of 4.5 points.
During the first day, Levon Aronian won against Indian players Adhiban and Gukesh, and drew with Russian Piotr Svidler, Chinese Ding Liren, and Saudi Arabian representative Saleh Salem.
The preliminary phase will consist of 15 rounds, with the top 8 players advancing to the quarterfinals.
Goldmoney Asian Rapid is the 7th stage of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour organized by Magnus Carlsen, featuring a total prize fund of $1.6 million, with $100,000 earmarked for the Goldmoney Asian Rapid event.
