Video: NSS Reveals Major Extortion Case

The employees of the National Security Service's Yerevan City Directorate have uncovered a serious crime as part of their ongoing efforts against criminality. This was announced in a statement by the NSS press center.

It turned out that the long-standing relationship between H.K., a resident of Kotayk village, and A.M., a resident of Yerevan, allowed the latter to continually assert his personal superiority over H.K. As a result, H.K. avoided interactions with him.

Aware of his advantage over H.K. and taking advantage of his vulnerability, A.M. threatened H.K. and his family with violence and destruction of their property on May 3, 2021, during their next meeting, demanding a large sum that amounted to €1,000, equivalent to 627,410 AMD. Consequently, H.K. was forced to agree to this extortion.

A.M., who had previously been convicted of robbery, executed his criminal intent by receiving the demanded €1,000 from H.K. in Abovyan city on May 6, 2021, and attempted to flee the scene. However, he was apprehended by NSS officers on site. A personal search revealed that he had the entire amount of extorted money on him.

On the same day, a criminal case was initiated in the NSS Investigative Department regarding the large-scale extortion. A.M. was arrested, and based on sufficient factual evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation, he has been charged and placed under arrest as a preventive measure.

Necessary investigative and other procedural actions are being undertaken using permissible criminal procedural tools to clarify all circumstances of the case, as well as the existence of possible other victims.

Note: The suspect or accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision in accordance with the rules established by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia.
