International Community Must Recognize the Armenian Genocide, Says Spanish Congress Member Jon Inarritu
Spanish Congress member Jon Inarritu is hopeful that Spain will officially recognize the Armenian Genocide as soon as possible at the state level. He emphasizes the importance of recognition by the international community, stating it would demonstrate to Turkey that its stance is unacceptable in historical, moral, and legal terms. Inarritu expressed this viewpoint in response to questions from Armenpress.
“Mr. Inarritu, in your opinion, what should be the main issue for progressive humanity 106 years after the Armenian Genocide in terms of recognition, condemnation, and prevention of such crimes?”
“In my opinion, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is a pending issue for several countries. It is a matter related to the historical justice of the Armenian people, but it also has to be a step that guarantees such serious crimes do not recur,” he replied.
“Do you think Turkey's recognition is possible, considering the country’s aggressive and denialist policies? What can the Armenian people expect in terms of just restitution?”
“I sincerely believe that under Erdoğan’s current government, it is impossible, and for others, it is not a simple question. Turkey has denied this genocide for a century. The international community must recognize it to show Turkey that its position is unacceptable in historical, moral, and legal terms.”
“Mr. Inarritu, do you think that recognition and an apology from Turkey are enough to restore historical justice?”
“I think that could be the first step. It would help improve relations between the two peoples, Turkey and Armenia, but it would also be good for the Turkish people. Germany should be followed as an example in recognizing its historical responsibility. Turkey would be a better country if they did the same as Germany.”
“What do you think is preventing Spain from recognizing the Armenian Genocide? What are the views in the country?”
“In Spain, the Armenian Genocide has been recognized by several parliaments, such as the Basque Parliament or the Catalonian Parliament, but it is expected that Congress or the Spanish government will do so. I think it is clear that Turkey is exerting great pressure to avoid recognition. I hope that Spain will recognize it as a state as soon as possible.”
