French President Emmanuel Macron Pays Tribute to Innocent Victims of the Armenian Genocide at Komitas Statue in Paris

Today, on April 24, which has been commemorated in France since 2019 as the Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide of 1915, French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the innocent victims of the Armenian genocide at the Komitas statue in Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron also made a post in Armenian on his Facebook page, reflecting on the 106th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. The post is presented below:

“On the occasion of the 106th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, all my thoughts are directed towards Armenia, which has borne the burdens of history. I am mentally with the Armenian people, those who escaped the genocide, and the refugees who were welcomed by France in the past, and whose descendants have shaped our country. We will never forget.

As I pledged, since 2019, April 24 has been officially recognized in France as the Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide. All across France, despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, this day included in our republican calendar will be marked. More than any other day, this April 24, our two peoples are united around the same memory.

Remembering the past—accepting the truth, honoring the deceased, and respecting the memory of the living is our duty to prevent forgetting, denial, and lies. Throughout history, committed to being by your side, we are also committed to the future at a time when your country has gone through a deadly conflict that has plagued the region, where far too much blood has been shed. We must create a new page of peace, prosperity, and reconciliation.

The fight for justice and truth that France has pursued and will continue to pursue alongside you is not just the struggle of Armenians. It is based on the principle of fraternity of the French Republic.

On this day of sadness, but also hope, when we remember together the horrific suffering of the martyrized people, friendship and brotherhood unite France and Armenia.”
