Five Prominent Turkish Figures Who Acknowledged the Armenian Genocide
1. Turkey's eighth president Turgut Özal (who died in 1993 under suspicious circumstances). In 1991 in Washington, Özal announced the possibility of acknowledging the genocide.
2. Renowned writer Orhan Pamuk: "In Turkey, one million Armenians and three hundred thousand Kurds were killed. Everyone is silent and hates me for speaking about it," said Pamuk in 2005. After that, he was forced to leave Turkey.
3. Historian Taner Akçam: He wrote the book "The Memoirs of Naim Efendi and the Telegrams of Talaat Pasha," which presents documents proving that the Young Turks deliberately exterminated the Armenians.
4. Journalist Hasan Jemal, the grandson of one of the architects of the Armenian Genocide. Initially, he denied it, but after studying history, he changed his mind: "On April 24, I share the pain of the genocide, the pain of my Armenian brothers," Jemal wrote on Twitter.
5. Writer Elif Shafak has faced persecution from Turkish authorities. She was accused of insulting the nation for her novel "The Bastard of Istanbul," which addresses the topic of the Armenian Genocide.
