Russia’s Foreign Ministry Responds to Aliyev's Intent to Sign Peace Agreement with Armenia

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on Ilham Aliyev's announcement regarding his intentions to sign a peace agreement with Armenia during a weekly briefing on April 15.

“We cannot help but welcome initiatives aimed at establishing sustainable peace and friendly relations between Baku and Yerevan. The agreements reached between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia on November 9 last year and January 11 this year provide a reliable foundation for this. We are ready to continue providing support to such processes,” Zakharova said in response to a question regarding whether Russia is prepared to act as a mediator in the drafting of this peace treaty and whether there is a vision for its content.

“Of course, Armenia and Azerbaijan are still at the beginning of a complex path towards forming the necessary level of mutual trust and resolving bilateral relations. It is important that this path is accompanied by a positive attitude, including in the informational sphere. Numerous difficulties and obstacles must be overcome by establishing cooperation with our Azerbaijani and Armenian friends. We emphasize that the stable economic development of the South Caucasus aligns with the interests of all partners in the region. We hope that in practical matters, the parties will strive for steps aimed at normalizing relations,” the diplomat added.
