Samuel Babayan to Establish a Political Party in Armenia

As of March 16 of this year, there are 91 political parties operating in the Republic of Armenia, according to the Ministry of Justice's response to the question posed by the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper. Among these are "Adekvad," "Democratic Alternative," and "National Agenda" parties, which submitted applications for state registration in 2020 and received such registration.

This year, in 2021, applications for state registration have been submitted by the "Justice and Homeland," Christian Democratic, and the "Alliance of Defenders of Democracy for the Republic" parties, all of which have received state registration. Thus, the response from the Ministry of Justice suggests that as of March 16, there is no political party in Armenia that has applied for state registration and is waiting for it.

The Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper also learned that several founding congresses of political parties will take place soon; for example, the congress of the "Unified Homeland" party is scheduled for April 23. It should be noted that this party has its roots in Nagorno-Karabakh, and its president is Samuel Babayan, indicating that he intends to create a party in Armenia as well and participate in the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for June 20.

It is possible that before then, other parties will also apply for state registration, as the legislation allows participation in elections even one day after obtaining registration. Additionally, currently, two parties—"Aren" and "My Armenia"—are in the document review stage after submitting their applications for state registration.

However, it is interesting that despite the fact that few of these 91 parties are active, and many are regarded as personal parties, this has not prevented the creation of new parties over the years.
