Despite First Round Defeat, Aronian Continues to Represent Armenia in Tournament
The first game day of the quarterfinals in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour online tournament has concluded. Levon Aronian's opponent in this stage is the world champion, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen. On the first day of play, the Armenian chess player lost to his rival with a score of 0.5 to 2.5. Aronian lost the first and second games, while the third ended in a draw. There was no need for a fourth game since Carlsen had already won the day, regardless of the outcome of that match.
The opponents will meet again today. In the preliminary phase, Aronian placed eighth, securing the right to continue in the playoffs. It is worth noting that in this tournament, Aronian still represents Armenia.
