33-Year-Old Life Imprisonment Convict Attempts to Acquire Large Quantity of Marijuana for Personal Use
The investigation department of the Armavir regional investigative committee has completed the preliminary investigation into the case of a life imprisonment convict at the Armavir penitentiary who attempted to illegally acquire narcotics without the intention of trafficking.
The investigation established and substantiated that on March 30, 2020, a 33-year-old life convict imprisoned at the Armavir penitentiary attempted to acquire 12.91 grams of homemade marijuana for personal use, without the intent to distribute. The convict made arrangements with an unidentified individual for this purpose.
The individual had prepared the marijuana by homemade methods, packaging it deceitfully in one-time use tea bags, and then placing it in a factory tea box among other items to prepare for delivery, which was supposed to be transferred to the convict according to their arrangements.
The convict reached an agreement with a resident of Echmiadzin city, who provides parcel transportation services for various incarcerated individuals, to transport the narcotics in his vehicle. He attempted to deliver the package to the convict at the Armavir penitentiary; however, prison staff discovered the concealed narcotics during a search of the parcel.
Based on collected sufficient evidence, the life convict has been charged under Article 34-268 (attempted illegal trafficking of narcotics or psychotropic substances without the demand for distribution) of the RA Criminal Code. The portion of the criminal case has been sent to court with an indictment summary. The case against the individual preparing and delivering the narcotics has been suspended based on Article 31, Part 1, Clause 1 of the RA Criminal Procedure Code.
Note: A person suspected of or charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
