Will Biden Recognize the Genocide and What Should Not the Armenian Government Do? Suren Sargsyan
American expert Suren Sargsyan made the following post on his Facebook page:
“Will Biden recognize the genocide and what should not the Armenian government do? Let me state it clearly: Biden is less restrained about the recognition of the genocide than any of his predecessors.
- U.S. relations with Turkey are tense.
- Turkish aggression and involvement in the Artsakh war are evident to the U.S.
- The losing side should be appeased, and Turkey should be pressured a bit.
- The Armenian community was given promises years ago, and they have not been fulfilled by the Obama-Biden duo.
- The promise still exists, and the community is putting pressure.
- There are resolutions in Congress regarding recognition that Biden can refer to.
- Biden's congressional team has voted in favor of recognition.
- Biden is quite aware of the Armenian issue.
- Most importantly, there is no process of 'reconciliation' between Armenians and Turks.
What the Armenian government should (not) do:
- It is clear that from February, Turkey will start a lobbying and diplomatic campaign in Washington. We should start a campaign too and support the lobbyists and the community. If we cannot help, at least do not obstruct.
- Under no circumstances should we yield to Turkish pressures or 'eat Turkish crumbs' until April 24.
- If any Armenian-Turkish process begins, Biden will avoid recognition on that basis, as it would hinder him. That is exactly what the Turks want. That is why we have statements coming from Ankara.
- We should call Biden and thank him for his stance on recognition.
- Do not change the ambassador at least during this sensitive period.
A question may arise: Why is it essential to focus on genocide recognition during this catastrophic period? The answer is obvious: Recognition is not only a restoration of historical justice and a legal and political assessment. It also allows us to close the cycle in Washington, after which we can concentrate all our resources on Armenia and Artsakh.”
