Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte Resigns
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella. The head of state has suggested that he continue to serve in his position.
“The President has granted time for making a decision and has invited the government to carry out its current duties,” the statement from the President’s office read.
The conversation between Conte and Mattarella lasted about half an hour. Today, January 27, at noon, Mattarella will begin consultations to find a way out of the current government crisis.
It was previously reported that Conte would resign due to the political crisis in the country. The crisis began after the ‘Italy Alive’ party announced the resignation of its representatives from the Council of Ministers. Key representatives of the party and the Democratic Party have already stated their support for Conte's candidacy for the position of head of his third government.
