Humanity is on the Brink of 'Catastrophic Moral Failure': WHO
Humanity is on the brink of a "catastrophic moral failure" due to the improper distribution of coronavirus vaccines. This statement was made by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during a press conference today, as reported by РБК.
“I must be honest. The world is at the brink of a catastrophic moral failure. And the price of that failure is being paid in lives and livelihoods in the world’s poorest countries,” Ghebreyesus stated.
He emphasized that coronavirus vaccines, which could be a salvation for many, may also become another “brick in the narrative of inequality” that divides people. “More than 39 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed to at least 49 higher-income countries. And only 25 doses have reached the lowest-income country. Not 25 million, not 25 thousand, but 25,” the WHO chief highlighted.
“The vaccine will be enough for everyone, but right now we need to work together as one global family to prioritize those who are at risk of severe illness and death,” the expert added.
Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 infections has exceeded 95 million, and the death toll has surpassed 2 million.
