Josep Borrell: The Population of Nagorno-Karabakh Has Already Suffered Great Hardships

The European Union welcomes the decision of Armenia and Azerbaijan to establish a humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict zone of Nagorno-Karabakh. This was stated in a statement issued by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

“The EU regrets that violations continue, and reports are being received about the ongoing military operations in and around Nagorno-Karabakh. This leads to more suffering among the civilian population. It deepens the conflict between states and societies, complicating the healing of wounds. The population of Nagorno-Karabakh has already suffered great hardships. Overall, the conflict has resulted in many unacceptable casualties among the civilian population,” Borrell emphasized, reiterating that the EU strongly condemns such attacks.

He added that he has had telephone conversations with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, stressing that the ceasefire should be unquestionable and strictly observed by both sides. “I also highlighted that attacks against the civilian population must cease immediately; they have no justification,” the statement read. He further noted that the EU is ready to assist the parties and the OSCE in achieving a long-term resolution to the conflict.
