We Will Introduce a Bill Prohibiting Abortion: N. Zohrapyan
According to official statistics, from 1991 to 2018, approximately 434,000 pregnancies were terminated in Armenia. The real number is undoubtedly much higher, as many abortions are performed illegally and go unrecorded. This was stated in a Facebook post by Naira Zohrapyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia party.
Zohrapyan noted that current legislation provides for a number of circumstances that allow for abortion, thereby depriving the unborn child of life. For example, when the pregnancy is up to 12 weeks, if the woman (the mother of the unborn child) is ill, if there are defects known in the unborn child, or if there are factors that increase the likelihood of developing defects in the child (such as a family history of children with developmental defects or hereditary diseases related to gender), and in circumstances not related to health, such as the death or divorce of the husband during pregnancy, or if either the woman or the husband is serving a prison sentence, among other cases.
Zohrapyan emphasized that she and Shake Isayan will soon introduce a bill regarding the right to life of the unborn child, which will prohibit artificial abortion, except in cases where the woman has health issues that are incompatible with pregnancy, as advised by doctors.
