Turkey Re-enters Conflict with Its Traditional Western Enemies: Bloomberg

The international news agency Bloomberg has published an extensive article regarding Turkey's Mediterranean aspirations. According to Ermenihaber, the article suggests that Turkey has no intention of solely searching for gas. Its actions are aimed at demonstrating power and showcasing itself as the leading player and largest force in the eastern Mediterranean.

The article mentions that Turkey is once again entering into conflict with its traditional enemies in the West. The author, Ryan Gingeras, a professor of national security relations at the California Maritime Institute and an expert on Turkey's maritime policy, believes that Turkey wants to assert its influence worldwide and is even willing to resort to forceful measures to achieve this.

According to Gingeras, the efforts to search for gas are underpinned by much deeper geopolitical issues. In this context, one of Turkey's strategic aims is to achieve independence. The author also notes that President Erdoğan aims to turn Turkey into a country equipped with all types of weapons by 2023, which seems rather unrealistic.

Moreover, the Turkish dream of becoming a superpower with a $750 billion economy is highly questionable, especially as the European Union is deciding to impose new sanctions against Turkey.
