VIDEO: Rare Bird Species Captured on Film

A breeding pair of a rare bird species, the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), has been documented in the territory of the Caucasian Biodiversity Refuge (CWR). This was reported by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Values.

The unique avifauna of Armenia is always under the attention of the NGO 'ArAves' (Ar=Armenia, Aves=Birds) and the forest guards of the Caucasian Biodiversity Refuge. 'ArAves' actively studies the rich avifauna of Armenia and places significant emphasis on the stable dynamics of vulture populations.

The documented bird species is listed in the Red Book of Animals of the Republic of Armenia and is classified as scarce and endangered. According to the data from the Red Book, the population consists of 8-10 breeding pairs. The population of the Bearded Vulture is also declining globally. The species is included in the IUCN Red List and has been given a 'Near Threatened' status since 2014.

According to data from the Government of Armenia, the population of the Bearded Vulture is affected by the use of pesticides in agricultural and forest enterprises, illegal hunting, trapping, and also the reduction of food resources. The Bearded Vulture predominantly nests in rocky areas of high mountains, preferring deep rocky gorges, usually at altitudes of 800-2000 meters above sea level. Nesting occurs from early January to mid-February, with a single egg laid each year. They feed on the carcasses of animals, primarily smaller and medium-sized, and sometimes on large ungulates.

The Caucasian Biodiversity Refuge is a privately protected area where hunting and any unlawful activities against nature are prohibited. The area is under the constant attention and supervision of forest guards and cameras. This is why it is possible to encounter various rare animal species, such as the Bearded Vulture, in the CWR territory. The refuge is managed by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Values (FPWC).
