Levon Ayvazyan Meets with Clare Maitrault to Discuss the Fate of Soldier Gurgen Alaverdyan
On August 26, Levon Ayvazyan, the head of the Armenian Ministry of Defense's Department of Defense Policy and International Cooperation, received a delegation led by Clare Maitrault, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Armenia. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense.
During the meeting, questions related to the fate of Gurgen Alaverdyan, an Armenian soldier who was in the custody of the Azerbaijani side, were discussed. Ayvazyan expressed the Ministry of Defense's concern regarding videos circulated by Azerbaijani media about Alaverdyan since August 23 and their content, which constitutes a gross violation of internationally recognized rights, particularly the commitments undertaken by Azerbaijan under international humanitarian law.
Considering the similar practices adopted by the Azerbaijani authorities over the years, the Ministry of Defense has urged the ICRC to be more vigilant in protecting the rights of individuals of Armenian descent under Azerbaijani jurisdiction. The head of the ICRC's office in Yerevan assured that the delegation is taking all necessary steps to ensure the procedural rights associated with Gurgen Alaverdyan's status.
