Gagik Khachatryan's Defenders Submitted a Challenge to the Prosecutor
The first court session took place regarding the case of Gagik Khachatryan, the former head of the State Revenue Committee and former Minister of Finance, and his nephew, Karen Khachatryan. The criminal case has been assigned to Judge Arthur Mkrtchyan.
During the court session, the defense side presented a motion to disqualify the prosecuting attorney, but did not submit such a request against the presiding judge.
One of Gagik Khachatryan's defenders, Amram Makinyan, noted that the timeframe for this particular session is very limited, and they cannot fully present everything within the legal framework, as the legality in their case has been undermined since 2019.
Defense attorney Yerem Sargsyan also stated that the prosecutor should have ensured legality during the pre-trial proceedings and, if necessary, withdrawn the charges. However, the behavior of the prosecutor does not give such hopes, which reflects the prosecutor's conduct throughout the entire pre-trial investigation.
Prosecutor Sargsyan officially declared that he has no constraints and has been guided solely by the law and internal conviction throughout his entire professional activity. According to him, no one can better attest to whether he has any constraints.
The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, led by Judge Arthur Mkrtchyan, has retired to the deliberation room to decide on the motion to disqualify the prosecuting attorney in the case of Gagik and Karen Khachatryan. The court's decision will be announced today at 15:00.
