Five Criminal Cases Filed Against Gurgen Alaverdyan in Azerbaijan
On August 23, Gurgen Alaverdyan, an officer of the Armenian Armed Forces who became disoriented and subsequently found himself in Azerbaijani territory, has been charged with five different articles of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code. This was reported by Razm.info.
The specified articles carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A joint statement regarding the initiation of these criminal cases was released by Azerbaijan's State Security Service and the Prosecutor General's Office on August 25.
The charges include: "conducting aggressive warfare"; "espionage"; "creation of armed formations or groups not specified by law"; "illegal acquisition, transportation, storage, and transfer of firearms, ammunition, and explosives"; and "illegal crossing of the Azerbaijani border".
It is noteworthy that on August 23, the Armenian Ministry of Defense reported that officer Gurgen Alaverdyan had gotten lost due to adverse weather conditions while inspecting a combat position. Earlier, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense issued a statement claiming that Lieutenant Alaverdyan had allegedly carried out a diversionary attack towards Goranboy and ended up in their territory.
