Azerbaijan Violates the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War
Director of the "Henkak" analytical center and former advisor to the President of Artsakh, Tigran Abrahamyan, made a post on his Facebook page stating:
"Azerbaijan has once again violated the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War by releasing a video involving an Armenian serviceman held in Azerbaijan. I find it pointless to speak about the failed tricks of Azerbaijani propaganda and its quality, because the released video will work against Azerbaijan from both a propaganda and quality perspective, as well as from the standpoint of international law.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has significant work to do regarding this issue and concerning Armenian citizens in Azerbaijan. Nonetheless, numerous violations of the Geneva Convention have not received a strong response from international organizations, resulting in Azerbaijan blatantly disregarding many provisions of international law and continuing its outdated practices.
The "Henkak" analytical center, considering the importance of this topic, has published some peculiarities related to it on its official page, particularly issues concerning the rights of prisoners of war and visits from ICRC representatives, which are established by the provisions of the Geneva Convention.
The Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War (Convention III) was adopted on August 12, 1949, and came into force on October 21, 1950.
- Armenia ratified the four Geneva Conventions as well as Additional Protocols I and II in 1993, and ratified Additional Protocol III in 2011.
- Azerbaijan ratified the four Geneva Conventions in 1993 but has yet to ratify the three additional protocols.
- The Republic of Artsakh unilaterally acceded to the Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols on January 26, 1993.
