Amulsar Protectors Arrive in Yerevan from Jermuk in a Car Rally to Join Environmentalists' Protest
In support of Amulsar, today, August 20, residents of Jermuk and surrounding communities reached Yerevan via car rally and joined environmentalists gathered at Freedom Square. A group of environmentalists from Yerevan was waiting for the rally participants at Freedom Square.
Currently, the participants of the protest are marching towards Republic Square. The activists carry drums and banners with slogans such as "My knees tremble when I hear Amulsar, Government of Armenia," "The Environmental Impact Assessment for Amulsar must be deemed null and void," and "We are our mountains and the tiny stones beside them." The Amulsar protectors have stated that they are initiating a large chain of peaceful disobedience.
"It is time for the government to demonstrate political will and put an end to the plans for the devastation of Amulsar. There are many and multi-layered grounds to prohibit the exploitation of the metal open-pit mine in Amulsar. It is worth mentioning that the Prime Minister has publicly promised that the monitoring results from Elard Company will serve as a basis for decision-making. It is time to fulfill the promises," reads their statement.
