Edmon Marukyan Appeals to Felix Tsolakyan Regarding Vanadzor Chemical Plant
The leader of the 'Enlightened Armenia' faction in the National Assembly, Edmon Marukyan, wrote on his Facebook page: 'Today, I have officially appealed to the Minister of Emergency Situations of Armenia, Felix Tsolakyan, raising the issue of neutralizing hazardous and toxic materials present in the territory of the Vanadzor Chemical Plant.
The problem is that no one works there anymore, and the safety and firefighting units of Khimplast have also disbanded. Yet, an enormous quantity of ammonia, ammonia water, as well as 300 kg of mercury, and more, are still being stored in increasingly deteriorating containers every day.
It is clear that Khimplast is hazardous, and it is also clear that if it explodes, it could level an area with a radius of dozens of kilometers and claim thousands of human lives. This is not just a theoretical danger; it is becoming a more tangible threat every day. Neutralizing the consequences of such a disaster will be incomparably more complex and time-consuming than preventing it, not to mention the moral aspect of the issue. Society continues to raise alarms about the danger, yet no effective actions have been taken towards the neutralization of hazardous materials.
Accordingly, I have requested the minister to take immediate action to resolve the issue of neutralizing hazardous and toxic materials present at the Vanadzor Khimplast. As soon as I receive a response, it will also be published on my official page.'
