Armen Sarkissian to Initiate Discussions on Constitutional Matters
The newspaper "Jrakanut" reports that the President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, does not rule out the possibility of holding further discussions regarding the Constitutional Court. This was stated by the press service of the President's Office in response to the newspaper's inquiry.
The point is that the President's Office had issued a statement asserting, "By setting a date for the referendum, the President of the Republic does not express his opinion or position regarding the content of the constitutional amendments approved by the National Assembly and put to a referendum, nor about the procedures for making that decision." In other words, it appears that Armen Sarkissian simply scheduled the date for the referendum based on the powers granted to him by the Constitution, but this does not imply that he supports the procedure.
Moreover, the newspaper again sent an inquiry to the President's Office, asking for clarification on his stance regarding the content of the constitutional amendments and the decision-making procedures. In response, the President's Office stated: "The President of the Republic does not rule out the continuation of further discussions, consultations with civil-political groups, the professional community, and state bodies such as the National Assembly, the Government, and the Constitutional Court, as well as seeking advisory opinions from relevant international organizations and experts,” they noted.
