Does Our Country Need War Today or Not? Arthur Vanetsyan
The Director of the National Security Service, Arthur Vanetsyan, believes that the public should be informed about the negotiations with Azerbaijan regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. Vanetsyan expressed this opinion during a meeting with the editors of several print media outlets yesterday.
“In the last two years, there have been many conflicting statements regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. On one hand, the authorities claim that they are not negotiating, but we see that there are certain contacts and negotiation processes occurring. The alternative to negotiations is war, and does our country need war today or not?” stated Vanetsyan.
According to him, regardless of whether we win or lose in a potential war, the Armenian authorities are obligated to do everything necessary to ensure a peaceful negotiation process.
On the other hand, if there are negotiations that the government is not disclosing, this also poses another risk, according to Vanetsyan. Of course, negotiations must have a confidential component, but Vanetsyan believes that the public should be somewhat informed about what is being discussed with the opposing country.
“We have three important principles: Nagorno-Karabakh can never be part of Azerbaijan, the right of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to self-determination is inalienable, and the resolution of the conflict can only be through a comprehensive solution,” Vanetsyan stated.
It is worth recalling that on January 29 and 30, meetings took place in Geneva between the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Elmar Mammadyarov. The meeting on January 29 lasted 7 hours, and on January 30 it continued for another 4 hours. The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that the negotiations in Geneva between the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan were the most intensive in recent years regarding the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
