Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly Convened Tomorrow Regarding Constitutional Court

An extraordinary session of the National Assembly will be held tomorrow, announced Lilit Makunts, the leader of the 'My Step' faction, to reporters after a meeting of the NA Council.

"The extraordinary session will convene at 11:00 AM tomorrow," she said.

It should be noted that the agenda of the session includes a draft on amendments and additions to the constitutional laws on the 'Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly', 'Referendum', and 'Constitutional Court'.

When asked to comment on the statement made by their faction member Hovik Aghazaryan, claiming that 37 people cannot co-author a draft and that he personally did not sign it, Makunts remarked that she is not familiar with Aghazaryan's expressed opinion and cannot comment on it.

According to the draft law on making amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, it is proposed to revise Article 213, concerning the tenure of members and the president of the Constitutional Court, as follows: "Article 213. The tenure of the president and members of the Constitutional Court: The tenure of the president and members of the Constitutional Court, appointed before the entry into force of Chapter 7 of the Constitution, shall cease."

"The nominations for vacant positions of Constitutional Court judges are carried out successively by the Government, the President of the Republic, and the general assembly of judges. The procedure and deadlines for filling the vacant positions arising from the 1st part of this article shall be established by a special procedure provided by the constitutional law on 'Constitutional Court', which must be adopted and come into force by April 1, 2020."
