Forrights.am: Criminal authority declares hunger strike and thirst strike in Ararat prison

The administration of the Ararat penitentiary has begun to fight against 'thieves' by creating unbearable conditions for their detention. In response, the 'thieves' have begun to oppose the administration, sometimes resorting to extreme forms of protest.

Recently, 39-year-old convict Karen Karapetyan announced a hunger strike and a thirst strike at the Ararat penitentiary, as reported by Forrights.am. He is protesting against the decision of the prison chief Arman Melkonyan to transfer him from his detention cell to a dilapidated one.

This information was revealed to us by Karapetyan's friends. Other individuals were also held in the same room as Karen Karapetyan, and all of them are being transferred.

Karapetyan was being held in the 'thieves' cell' at Ararat, where the convicts had created relatively decent and comfortable conditions using their own resources and had renovated the room. Interestingly, when speaking about this cell, they do not use the word 'cell.'

There was an eight-pointed star drawn on the wall of that room, known as 'Восьмиконечник', which is considered one of the symbols of the criminal world. The prison chief has ordered the removal of the 'Восьмиконечник' from Karen Karapetyan's wall.

Karen Karapetyan has been in detention since 2010. He was convicted for armed robbery with intent to commit robbery, involving a minor in robbery, and for illegal possession and use of weapons. He has two more years to serve.
