As already reported, a tragic accident occurred in Yerevan today. Around 08:20, 65-year-old Hrach Yetaryan hit a 10-year-old child and the child's mother with his KamAZ truck at a pedestrian crossing in front of School No. 52 on Shiraz Street. The child was transported to the "Surp Astvatsamayr" medical center with extremely severe injuries, from where a short time later a report was received that the child had died without regaining consciousness.
The spokesperson for the "Surp Astvatsamayr" medical center, Gevorg Derzhan, also responded to the incident. Derzhan stated that the child had died at the scene; however, at the parents' request, he was transported to the intensive care unit of the medical center by an ambulance.
It was found that the deceased was a 10-year-old girl named Ellen M., a resident of the Shengavit administrative district, who was with her mother at that moment. The mother also sustained injuries but refused medical assistance.
Shamshyan.com has released a video of the unfortunate incident. Individuals with weak nerves are advised not to watch.
The media also reports that local residents have stated that traffic accidents and pedestrian incidents, including tragic ones, frequently occur in that area. Both residents and school staff have repeatedly appealed to the Yerevan municipality and traffic police to install lighting and artificial irregularities in the area, but every time they were told that this issue should be resolved by the school.
The unfortunate incident could have been prevented if:
- Overhead or underground crossings were finally built in the areas adjacent to schools and kindergartens.
- Traffic of heavy vehicles and large trucks in Yerevan was legally prohibited during morning and daytime hours.
- The traffic police carried out patrols in the areas surrounding schools.
