Fact: Did Karen Karapetyan Mediate to Keep Gas Prices from Rising?

Fact newspaper writes: In recent months, one of the most discussed topics has been the potential increase in the price of imported gas in Armenia. This is natural, as a possible increase in gas prices would lead to a chain reaction of price hikes for other goods and services, resulting in a serious blow to the living standards of the population.

The authorities insist that gas prices will not increase during the winter months. According to various sources, an increase in gas prices is expected starting in April. However, sources from the newspaper indicate that the increase is actually set to occur in January 2020 but will not affect consumers, as compensation will again be provided.

According to the newspaper's sources in Moscow, the primary 'protagonist' in the negotiations regarding the price of gas supplied to Armenia is former Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, who is doing everything possible to prevent any drastic changes concerning gas prices.

The source reported that he was the one who mediated with Russian officials to refrain from increasing gas prices in September 2019, which had been previously planned. Various discussions suggest that the results of these negotiations will largely depend on how the Armenian authorities conduct themselves during this period.
