Murder Committed 14 Years Ago Uncovered: Investigative Committee Presents Details

The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia has revealed a murder case in Yerevan, involving a resident named N. Yaghutyun, which occurred back in 2005. One individual has been arrested.

On October 22, 2019, at 22:40, the police department of Erebuni received a report from a citizen stating that in 2014, they learned from their deceased father that several years prior, their aunt, her son, and his wife had hosted another aunt in their house on 11th Street, Nor Aresh, Yerevan, where they killed her and concealed the body.

A criminal case was initiated at the Erebuni police station under Article 104, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code, which was transferred to the investigative division of the Investigative Committee for the Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative districts and accepted for processing, forming an investigative group.

As a result of the necessary investigative and procedural actions, as well as operational and search measures, several circumstances surrounding the case were established, including the motive and the identity of the person suspected of committing the crime, who is a Yerevan resident born in 1972.

According to information obtained during the investigation, relatives of N. Yaghutyun, born in 1937, learned about her possession of a large number of gold jewelry and murdered her in their house on 11th Street, Nor Aresh, in order to seize the jewelry. They then hid her body beneath the floor of one of the bedrooms in their basement.

During a search conducted at the address as prescribed by law, human remains—including a skull, bones, clothing, and other items of interest for the investigation—were discovered and confiscated from the basement under the bedroom.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of killing N. Yaghutyun, his mother’s aunt, and he has provided a confession. Family members of the suspect have been interrogated, and a forensic genetic examination has been commissioned for the discovered remains and clothing.

The preliminary investigation is ongoing.

Notice: A suspect or accused in a criminal offense is considered innocent until proven guilty by a final judgment of a court in accordance with the procedural rules stipulated in the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia.
