Seizures and Interrogations: Inquiry Underway to Determine Circumstances of Fetal Death

The Criminal Investigation Department of the Republic of Armenia is conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a newborn at a medical center. This was reported by the press service of the Investigative Committee.

On September 29, 2019, a citizen born in 1986 reported that days earlier, on September 24, 2019, he had sought medical assistance at the 'Republican Institute of Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology' for a 39-week pregnancy, where he gave birth to a male child, who died on the same day.

Considering that the preliminary materials prepared based on the report contain signs of a crime as defined by the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, a criminal case was initiated under the second part of Article 130 of the Criminal Code, which has been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ajapnyak and Davtashen administrative districts for further investigation.

The mother has been recognized as a victim and has been interrogated. During the preliminary investigation, several investigative measures have been conducted, including seizures, interrogations, and the assignment of forensic medical and genetic examinations.

To clarify significant circumstances related to the criminal case, inquiries have been sent to the director of the 'Republican Institute of Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology' and the Ministry of Health of Armenia, and operational instructions have been issued to police officers. The investigation is ongoing.

It should be reminded that the case concerns Haykuhi Khachatryan, who recently gave birth at the 'Republican' maternity hospital; her newborn child had died. Today, she was visited by Health Minister Arsen Torosyan, who assured her that he would be closely monitoring the entire process of medical treatment and the investigation of the case.
