The U.S. No Longer Plays the Role of Europe's Defender: Merkel
The United States will no longer automatically defend Europe; now the U.S. must make greater efforts to ensure its own security. This was stated today by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during discussions on the 2020 federal budget in the Bundestag.
“Europe is connected to the U.S. through its values. However, there is no longer an automatic role as a defender, when they took on the role of protector of Europe,” Merkel stated.
“Europe must make a significant contribution here,” Merkel emphasized.
