Intrigues Surrounding Vladimir Putin's Visit to Armenia
The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports that on October 1, a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (EAEU) will be held in Yerevan. This meeting is regularly attended by the leaders of EAEU member states, and back in May of this year, during a press conference, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that on that day, in addition to leaders from other countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin would also participate.
Prime Minister Pashinyan also stated that alongside this visit, he would have a working discussion with Vladimir Putin. Notably, this will be Vladimir Putin's first visit to Armenia since the Velvet Revolution and Pashinyan's rise to the position of Prime Minister.
Recently, however, the public has been discussing the possible meetings and developments expected during Putin's visit, diverting attention from the official agenda of his arrival. According to various sources, Vladimir Putin has also expressed a desire to visit penitentiary establishments and intends to meet with former President Robert Kocharyan, who is accused in the March 1 case. In other words, he is even willing to visit a detention center to meet Kocharyan personally.
These reports have already become a subject of public discussion and criticism regarding why he has shown such interest. Yesterday, "Zhoghovurd" spoke with Sergey Kopirkin, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia to Armenia, who stated that currently, not much is known regarding the details of Vladimir Putin's visit and possible meetings.
"I am not ready to answer these questions in detail at the moment, but I know that a meeting of the EAEU Supreme Council is scheduled for October 1 in Armenia, which is the main body of this structure and takes place at the level of the leaders of member countries, and in the case of Armenia, at the level of the head of government. This is what is known and planned at this moment," said Kopirkin.
