A Statue of Karen Demirchyan to Be Installed in Front of the Sports and Concert Complex

A statue of Karen Demirchyan will be installed in front of the Sports and Concert Complex. This decision was approved by the Government during today’s meeting, where a proposal was made to allocate funds from the 2019 state budget and amend the Government's decision made in December 2018.

The Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Suren Papikyan, noted that the adoption of this proposal is necessary for carrying out the design work related to the statue of Karen Demirchyan within the area of the complex named after him. "It is planned to allocate 3 million 281 thousand drams from the Government's reserve fund to provide a subsidy to the community of Yerevan. According to the preliminary budget presented by sculptor Sargis Babayan, the construction of the monument will require 54.2 million drams. This issue has also been discussed with the family members of Karen Demirchyan. The desire and initiative to place the statue there came from them, and the government has agreed to their request," said Papikyan.

"If I am not mistaken, the new location was suggested by the Yerevan municipality, and the family agreed. In the end, we know that there has long been a decision regarding the placement of Karen Demirchyan's statue, and it was initially planned to install it on Mashtots Avenue. However, due to various circumstances and urban development in the area, this location was considered less acceptable by the family, leading to the idea of searching for a new place. Ultimately, the municipality proposed placing the statue in front of the Sports and Concert Complex, and both the Government and the family provided their approval. The design of the statue has also been presented and accepted. Therefore, we are officially initiating the process now," said the Prime Minister while inquiring about the timeline for its completion.

"Let me not specify any timelines at this moment; however, we request that this be completed as soon as possible," responded the minister.

Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that it is very important that this matter does not remain unresolved as sometimes happens. Papikyan added that they will be persistent in this matter.
