Charges Brought Against Samvel Karapetyan's Nephew
Businessman Samvel Karapetyan's nephew, Narek Karapetyan, a representative of the 'Tashir' group, and his friend have been charged. This information was confirmed by Naira Harutyunyan, acting head of the information and public relations department of the Investigative Committee, in a conversation with NEWS.am.
The charges against the young men were brought under Article 182, Part 3, Clause 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, specifically for extortion in particularly large amounts by an organized group. As a preventive measure, they have been placed under signature not to leave.
According to the official statement from the Investigative Committee, on July 4, 2019, at around 02:00, a report was received at the hospital that a man born in 1989 had sought medical assistance for multiple abrasions of the soft tissues around the back and a contusion of the soft tissues of the frontal and occipital regions.
That same day, the citizen who sought medical assistance gave a report and explanation stating that on July 3, at around 19:30, he was subjected to violence by a young man born in 1990 and three other individuals accompanying him. Furthermore, on July 4, at around 01:00, the same young man, along with 10 others, beat him and his friend while threatening to kill them and demanding large sums of money through extortion.
A criminal case has been initiated at the Central Police Department of the Republic of Armenia under the provisions of Article 182, Part 3, Clause 2 and Article 118 of the Criminal Code, with the investigation being conducted by the Main Department for Investigating Crimes Against Individuals of the Investigative Committee of Armenia. The 30-year-old man and his friend have been recognized as victims.
During the investigation of the criminal case, extensive investigative actions were carried out, and forensic, criminological, and voice identification examinations were appointed, along with confrontations.
The objective investigation revealed that the 28-year-old young man, having pre-arranged with his friend to extort considerable sums of money through threat, used violence against the 30-year-old man on July 3, 2019, at around 19:30 on Alek Manukyan Street in Yerevan. After this, at around 22:30 on the same day, he met him again in one of Yerevan's cafes and demanded that he pay a particularly large sum of money.
After being refused, the 28-year-old young man called the victim and lured him to a restaurant in Yerevan for a meeting. During this meeting, which was also attended by other individuals, he continued to demand the large sum of money by threatening violence against the victim and his family members, resorting once again to violence against the 30-year-old man and his friend who had come to meet him.
