Gegham Petrosyan's Accusation Based on Testimony of One Person, Lawyer Claims
Gegham Petrosyan, the former deputy commander of the police forces accused of the murder of Zakhar Hovhannisyan using a firearm on March 1, 2008, refuses to testify, citing a lack of trust in the investigating authority. This was reported to News.am by Petrosyan's lawyer, Vagarshak Gevorgyan.
It is worth mentioning that today, during a conversation with journalists in the National Assembly, the head of the SIS, Sasun Khachatryan, expressed dissatisfaction with Petrosyan’s refusal to testify. However, according to Khachatryan, the preliminary investigation body has presented sufficient evidence to charge him.
According to Vagarshak Gevorgyan, the basis of his client’s accusation relies on the testimony of just one person, a police officer, the credibility of which the SIS has not attempted to question. “This testimony is based on data obtained from internal and external surveillance operations. Law enforcement monitored and recorded the officer’s conversation, during which that person clearly described the incident and stated that, allegedly, protester Zakhar Hovhannisyan attacked with an iron rod or reinforcement and tried to strike Gegham Petrosyan on the head. According to his account, a situation arose where either Zakhar Hovhannisyan had to hit, resulting in Gegham Petrosyan's death, or Petrosyan had to shoot at him, after which Petrosyan shot at Hovhannisyan,” Gevorgyan explained, noting that the incident described by this person constitutes an act of necessary defense.
Gevorgyan also mentioned that the internal surveillance operation took place in May of this year.
